Edward Baldwin died leaving several "Slaves for life" and stipulating in his will that they should be sold at public auction with the proceeds used to pay debts and benefit his heirs. The petitioners as his heirs and representatives ask the court's permission to offer the slaves at a private sale to ensure them from being "bought up by foreigners and sent out of the state." They also argue that a private sale would prevent the slaves from running off, thereby reducing the value of the estate.
