Petition #20983112

Abstract

On 8 November 1831, the executors of Jeremiah Chase's estate petitioned the court to sell the slaves of the estate in order to pay a judgment. The court assented. Here, Sally, Hester, and 24 other persons of color assert that "they were the Slaves of Jeremiah T. Chase ... but were liberated and manumitted by his last Will and testament, and some of them have been in the actual enjoyment of their freedom unmolested." They are now confined in jail and are about to be removed from the state without having any chance "to assert their rights to freedom in the lawful tribunals of the State." The petitioners ask the court to prevent their removal from Annapolis within the next three days and to rescind the previous order, "there appearing to be a large balance against the said Executors on their last account." The court responded by granting the petition "as prayd."

Result: Granted.
