Osborne, Oscar, Isaac, Basil, Henry, and Dinah contend that they were manumitted by the will of Hester Hood, but Hood's administrator, Joseph Hopkins, claims their services for a term "under the pretence that the personal Estate of the said Hester Hood is insufficient for the payment of her debts." The court has authorized Hopkins to sell or hire out the slaves. But the petitioners charge that Hopkins has failed to account properly for the funds in the estate or to prove any insufficiency. They ask the court to compel Hopkins to account for all monies received and to rescind its authorization for their hire or sale. The court granted the petition and "directed a citation to issue returnable to the next Court."
