Petition #20983209

Abstract

Lyde Goodwin, executor of the last will and testament of Doctor Lyde Goodwin, asks the court to revoke letters of administration granted to Samuel Keavin for the estate of Lyde Goodwin's former slave, Daniel Cooper. Goodwin states that following "the death of his Master," Daniel became a seaman and was sailing on the ship Warren "at the time of her capture." Goodwin further states that Daniel's wages as a seaman belong to the estate of the late Doctor Lyde Goodwin, but that Keavin "contrary to law" has improperly obtained letters of administration on the "pretended Estate." In his answer, Samuel Keavin states that Daniel Cooper, before his death, "always acted as a free man." Charles Ridgely's sworn deposition reveals that "Daniel Cooper negro was the property of his father Doctor Lyde Goodwin ... and a slave for life."
