Sophia Tydings, a forty-three-year-old married woman of color and mother of ten, was owned by Jacob Franklin and has been recently manumitted by Ann Franklin. She states that "her husband has always been free, and her children are now Slaves." As her children are "of very tender age" and she currently has "an Infant at the breast," she believes "it would be impossible for her to remove from the State at this time." Tydings asks the court to "grant her a permit to remain in the State" and she herewith produces to the court "evidence of her good character and conduct."
