Petition #20983325

Abstract

On 14 January 1832, the court appointed William P. Hardesty as guardian of James Medcalf. The minor's estate consisted of three slaves: a woman named Terry, appraised at $100, and "one negro boy appraised to $200 and one negro girl appraised to $200." Hardesty states that Medcalf wanted "to leave your petitioner" and "has at last actually eloped from him, taking the said negroes with him, secreting them from the knowledge of your petitioner." Since Medcalf has now indentured himself to William Eaton of Annapolis, Hardesty asks the court to revoke his guardianship, to appoint Richard J. Jones as the new guardian, and to exonerate "your petitioner from all further responsibility on Account of his Guardianship."
