David Cross, his wife, Airy Cross, and their children, Charles, David, Perry, Mary, Harriet and James Cross, want to be freed from William Black. Black moved to Ohio, taking his slaves with him. While living in Ohio, he manumitted the slaves and they became free "according to the laws of the state of Ohio." Black later returned to Maryland, and he "Compelled your petitioners to remove with him ... under the false pretext that your Petitioners were Still his slaves." Citing that Black still holds them in bondage, the Cross family seek their freedom.
