Petition #20983604

Abstract

Charles R. Stewart, executor of the estate of John Hall, states that on 17 July 1836, Willis Burgess ran away from the residence of John Pumphrey, to whom Stewart had hired him. Burgess "was apprehended the same night at Hampstead in Baltimore County ... on his way to York in Pensylvania." Stewart immediately sold Burgess for $1040 and asks the court to confirm the sale. He also states that the law entitles those who apprehended Burgess to receive only six dollars. Stewart asks the court to award them a greater amount to compensate them "for the risk and expence incurred, in arresting said Negro and conveying him to Jail."
