John and Ruth Haslup claim that they owned a slave, Eliza Kelly, and wanted to sell her but "were not willing to sell her to one of those persons who make a trade of buying slaves and transporting them for sale to the south western states." George Davis applied to the petitioners to purchase Eliza Kelly, claiming that he would respect the petitioners' wishes. The Haslups sold their slave to Davis for $500, believing his claims. Upon learning that Davis was actually a speculator in slaves, the Haslups tried to repurchase Eliza for the same price, but Davis refused to sell her. The Haslups ask the court to issue an injunction to prevent Eliza Kelly's sale or removal from the state. They also ask the court to compel Davis to return the slave Eliza Kelly to them upon repayment of the $500 and to void the sale.
