Abstract
Sam avers that he is a free man of color who is being "unjustly held in Slavery and bondage" by James McLaughlin. Sam requests a jury trial before the court and "the privilidge of procuring his Testimony in support of his title to freedom under the direction, and protection of this Honourable court." He also asks that the court prevent McLaughlin from "selling or disposing of your petitioner, untill a trial can be had as aforesaid."
Result: Granted; appealed; reversed.
