James B. Smith, guardian of Eliza Key Smith, petitions for permission to sell his daughter's fifteen-year-old slave, Rachel, as she is "of such an unmanagable and bad temper and so useless that he is compelled to part with her by sale or otherwise." He asks the court's instructions for undertaking the sale and investing the proceeds.
