Abstract

Jane Rock, an elderly slaveholder, married James Rock "about the 9th April 1839." She alleges that since their marriage her husband has treated her cruelly, "often compelling your petitioner to retire to her bed in consequence of the severity of the blows inflicted." Jane Rock charges that James married her to obtain her property, which he has "fraudulently conveyed" to John Parsons "for the avowed purpose as he has often alledged of starving out" his wife. She asks for a divorce and for any other relief the court deems suitable.
