Ellen and her four children, the former slaves of Robert Richardson, assert that in his last will and testament Richardson released them from slavery on the condition that they emigrate to Liberia within twelve months of his death. The twelve-month mark is approaching and, fearing that there may be no boat leaving for Liberia before twelve-month period elapses, the former slaves wish to formalize their "election to go to Liberia." They ask to "place this their solemn act upon the records of your honourable Court as perpetual evidence of the same."
