Petition #20984631

Abstract

In 1834, Rezin Hammond purchased from William Burton a slave named Horace for $105. It was understood at the time of the sale that Horace would serve until 7 October 1855, at which time he would be 31 and become a free man. However, Horace has attempted to escape many times and his behavior has been "notoriously vicious and turbulent." Hammond has repeatedly warned Horace that he would have his term extended and/or sell him out of state. Horace's "infamous character" has made a local sale impossible. In order to recoup his losses, including jail fees during Horace's recent incarceration, Hammond asks the court to extend Horace's term and for permission to transport him out of state for sale. Hammond fears for the safety of himself and his family should Horace be brought back to his property.

Result: Granted.
