Petition #20984726

Abstract

Dennis Claude Jr. requests that the term of service for his slave named Hamilton be extended as a means of compensating him for "the considerable expense and Great Inconvenience" occasioned by Hamilton's running away. Claude explains that since he purchased Hamilton from David Ridgely in 1838, Hamilton has run away "two or three times" and has often been found in Baltimore by Claude's overseer "in some House Occupied by free negroes." Alleging that Hamilton is a "notorious theft" and is frequently incarcerated, the petitioner prays that the court grant him authorization to sell Hamilton out of state.

Result: Granted.
