Petition #20984729

Abstract

Richard W. Gill, administrator of the estate of the late Margaret Mercer, asks the court for a credit on the first administration account he returned on Mercer's estate. Gill explains that the operations on Mercer's farm were "cultivated and carried on by the slave Labor which before her death had been Mortgaged to her by her Brother John Mercer." Gill represents that it was in the estate's best interest to harvest the tobacco and corn crops using the slaves mortgaged to his testatrix before her death. He explains that he can better discharge the debts of his testatrix by the "fruits of their labor."
