Petition #20984732

Abstract

William C. Lyles purchased an eighteen-year-old slave named Dick from Richard Thomas. Dick was to serve until he turned 40, which would have been 7 October 1863. Lyles claims that "he has always treated the said negro kindly and properly, yet he has often been notoriously vicious and turbulent often disobedient and almost useless." Despite being threatened with an extension of service, Dick stole a horse and attempted to escape. Lyles asks that the court extend the service of said negro and to grant him the authority to transport Dick out of state in order to sell him.
