John and Adam Miller purchased a term slave named Richard from William H. Woodfield in 1833. Seven years later, John Miller purchased Adam's interest in Richard. Miller claims that he treated Richard "kindly and properly yet said negro has been turbulent and disobedient." Last July Richard absconded from Miller and is now in the Anne Arundel County jail. Miller reports that he "has been subjected to the expence of $18.62" for Richard's apprehension and asks the court to extend Richard's term of service to indemnify him for his "expenses and loss." He also requests the authority to sell the slave within or outside the state.
