Petition #20984818

Abstract

A. Snowden Piggot seeks the court's assistance "in carrying out the wishes" of "a colored woman named Ann Thompson." Shortly before her death, Thompson bequeathed her daughter, also named Ann, to Piggot and asked him "to take charge of her & bring her up." Upon Thompson's death, Piggot went to fetch the child and discovered that she "had been conveyed away by some negroes." On the afternoon of Thompson's funeral, Piggot's father, Rev. Robert Piggot, attempted to claim the child but was rebuffed by "Thomas Watkins, a negro preacher," who informed the elder Piggot "that the Sharp St. Church intended to take her" and that "we 'would have a hard scuffle to get her.' “The petitioner believes that Ann is in the possession of said Watkins and asks the court to intervene on his behalf.
