After purchasing the term slave Amanda, Marcy Fountaine discovered that "said Amanda before your petitioner became her owner was in the constant habit of absconding whereby she was rendered of little value." Fountaine states that "he placed said Amanda for trial" with "a respectable resident of Baltimore County" who treated her well, but she ran away. The petitioner alleges that he has gone to "great expense and trouble" to apprehend the slave and he "has been obliged to lodge said Amanda in the city jail for safe custody." Fountaine asks that Amanda's term of service be extended to compensate for his losses.
