Before she died, Mrs. Rebecca Nicholson gave her granddaughter, Frances Rebecca Nicholson, a slave girl named Kitty as a gift. Frances has since died and Kitty and her child are now in the possession of the petitioner, Joseph Nicholson, who is Frances's father. However, the administrator of Mrs. Nicholson's estate "had thought it his duty to have the said Girl and her child returned as the property of his Testator." Joseph Nicholson asks that the court determine to whom the two slaves belong.
