Petition #20984827

Abstract

Henry Davis states that he is "fraudulently held and detained under a pretended indenture of apprenticeship" by Thomas Knighton. He cites that at the time the apprenticeship was executed he was not "a pauper, vagrant, lazy, indolent and worthless;" to the contrary, Davis claims that he was "capable of earning a comfortable livelihood ... by honest and industrial means." The petitioner argues that Knighton "assigned sold and transfered" him to Dr. Benjamin Bird in order "more effectually to conceal the fraud." Davis asks that Knighton "shew cause if any he hath why your petitioner shall not be released from the unjust and oppressive servitude."
