Petition #20984840

Abstract

Stephen L. Lee asks the court to extend the term of service of "negro boy" Clinton Wright. Lee states that he purchased Wright's "unexpired term" from H. Rooks in 1834, when Wright was five years old, and by a court order "was substituted as the owner of said Boy." Lee cites that he was to comply with the existing provisions of the deed of indenture "with the exception that your petitioner was not required to teach the said Boy to read." Lee further states that Wright has "eloped about twenty times" since being in his possession; as a result, Lee has lost the value of Wright's services during these times and has incurred additional expenses recovering the slave. Lee claims that "he has never been able to trust the said Boy" and that "the bad example" set by Wright "has had a most injurious tendency."
