John Griffis, administrator of the estate of John Martiacy, questions the appraised value of one of the estate's slaves. The inventory lists Maria, a nine-year-old girl, as having a value of $200. He reports that an heir to the estate, Amelia Fisher, has offered to purchase Maria for the price of $150 and Griffis feels that this sum represents "a fair value for said negro." With the other heirs in agreement with this arrangement, Griffis asks the court to issue an order authorizing the sale of Maria to Fisher.
