William Hardy, having been convicted of a felony, was bound to William H. Bird for seven years. On two occasions, Hardy ran away to Baltimore and was retrieved at Bird's expense. The petitioner believes "it will be utterly impossible to keep the said negro at work on the farm" and, moreover, he fears Hardy "will induce & persuade other negroes to run away from their masters." Bird petitions the court to extend Hardy's term of service and grant him permission to sell Hardy in or out of the state of Maryland.
