Petition #20985118

Abstract

James E. Williams seeks to sell his term slave, John Toogood, because of his "turbulent and unmanageable" behavior. Williams claims that John "did pretty much as he pleased" and that when Williams "undertook to correct him yesterday morning ... the said negro resisted him, & struck him with his fists & also with a large stick." [The inventory of the estate of John Childs followed this petition on the Anne Arundel County Orphans Court docket page. Included in the inventory were thirteen slaves, complete with ages and values. Even though this inventory has no connection to this particular petition, the data concerning the slaves was entered in this record.]
