Petition #20985119

Abstract

John Rice seeks compensation for losses arising from the "turbulent and ungovernable" behavior of his term slave named Vachel. Rice also owns Vachel's mother, Ann, who was manumitted, with her increase, by a former owner when she attains the age of thirty-five. Vachel has run away three times, fought with Rice's son, and threatened to kill a female servant. The petitioner claims that after Vachel ran away the first time, he warned the slave that if he ran away again he would sell him out of the state. Rice petitions the court to extend Vachel's term of service to compensate for his losses and to authorize the sale of Vachel out of state.
