Petition #20985121

Abstract

William Cecil requests authorization to sell his term slave named Henry Amer. Cecil explains that he purchased Henry Amer's unexpired term of service from James W. Allen in 1848, subsequent to Allen securing a judgment from the court to extend Amer's term of service due to the slave's "incorrigible" conduct. Cecil states that Henry Amer was "fully acquainted with the Law in case he persisted in his Bad Conduct," yet, since coming into his possession, Henry Amer has run away and exhibited "gross impropriety" towards his owner. He also charges that the slave's "bad example is Calculated to Corrupt the morals of the negroes in the Neighborhood."
