Petition #20985123

Abstract

William R. Thompson complains that Charles Stewart, a free person of color bound to him to learn the trade of shoemaking and usually "quite a good workman," has become "insolent and Idle" and refuses to work. Last June, Stewart's disorderly conduct culminated in his running away and being arrested. After this misdemeanor, for which "your petitioner never even Corrected him," Thompson brought Stewart to court so "the Boy should be warned of the Consequences of his bad Conduct." Thompson complains that Stewart again ran away to Baltimore, this time on a steamship, and was again arrested. He now petitions the court to extend Stewart's term in order "to make good to your petitioner all the costs of recapture and the loss of time &c" that he has sustained. He also asks the court for permission to sell Stewart's lengthened and unexpired time to "some person residing in this state."
