Petition #20985220

Abstract

Marius Duvall purchased a term slave named George Mackall from Edwin Duvall for $275, with the understanding that Mackall would serve him for six years. The petitioner complains, however, that since he has owned him, Mackall "has given evidence of vicious and turbulent conduct, being disobedient and unmanageable and utterly regardless of all commands or orders given him." Duvall states that Mackall has "by his conduct rendered himself obnoxious to the provisions" of an 1833 act of assembly, and he asks that the same may be enforced against the slave. [The inventory of the estate of William C. Lyles preceded this petition on the Anne Arundel County Orphans Court docket page. Included in the inventory were twelve slaves, complete with ages and values. Even though this inventory has no connection to this particular petition, the data concerning the slaves was entered in this record.]
