Petition #20985222
- Baltimore City, Maryland. February 16, 1852. - May 13, 1852.
- Court: Superior
- Salutation: To the Hon: Wm Frick: Judge of the Superior Court of the City of Baltimore
Abstract
The petitioners are members and trustees of the Colored Peoples First Baptist Church in the City of Baltimore, incorporated in 1837. They state that the church owned a building where "they have been for years in the habit of worshipping." Now they charge that the defendants "fraudulently & contrary to Law" sold the building to Benjamin Brown, preventing them from worshipping there and "enjoying their religious & legal rights & privileges." The petitioners ask the court to subpoena the defendants and to enjoin them "from using, occupying, or entering" the church. They ask the court to restore the building to "the purpose for which [it] was originally dedicated, that is to say, for the worship of God."
Result: Granted; dissolved; appealed.
