Petition #20985229

Abstract

Rachel Mack, a free woman of color, claims that her four children were apprenticed to Henry A. Crandall without her knowledge. When she approached Crandall about the arrangement, he told Mack "he never intended to exercise any rights of ownership over them, and would never deprive your petitioner of their services." Satisfied with this verbal agreement, Mack hired out her son James to Crandall with the understanding that James's wages would be applied towards rent the family owed Crandall. However, now that Henry has died, his widow, Eliza Crandall, claims that James is legally bound to her. Mack petitions that she has maintained her children "honestly and respectably" and that Eliza's claim is fraudulent. Mack asks that Eliza Crandall appear before the court and that several named "respectable Gentlemen" be summoned to give their testimony regarding her petition. She further asks the court to revoke the supposed indenture.
