Petition #20985320

Abstract

In August 1850, Richard Cowman purchased from John T. E. Hyde a slave named Ellen, whose term of servitude was set to expire on 1 January 1861. Cowman affirms that he has treated Ellen "with kindness and indulgence, yet she is turbulent, disobedient and Impudent beyond endurance." He adds that when she is "excited from passion," she is "perfectly deranged." Cowman states that he has warned Ellen that he will sell her if her attitude does not improve, but the "warning has had no effect upon her conduct, unless it be to make her worse." Cowman asks permission to sell Ellen's unexpired term to a person outside the state of Maryland.
