Petition #20985321

Abstract

Catharine Brown, a free woman of color, states that in September 1853, her three children were bound to Samuel Thomas. Brown argues that she did not consent to the indenture and that she and her husband, Daniel Green, "have been always able and willing to support comfortably their said children." She asks that the articles of apprenticeship be revoked and that her children be returned to her. [A notation on the Anne Arundel County Orphans Court, following this petition, revealed that two slaves, Ann Murdock and Margaret Ennis, in the estate of Joseph Ward elected to emigrate to Liberia instead of remaining "in this State, and continu[ing] slaves of the legal representatives" of said Ward. Even though this material has no connection to this particular petition, the data concerning the slaves was entered in this record.]
