Petition #20985433

Abstract

George Penny reports that he has a life estate in a slave named Joseph. Penny's only child, a son named E. M. E. Penny, will inherit Joseph "as the representative of his mother Elizabeth Penny," upon his father's death. Penny explains that he is "desirous and anxious to sell the said negro and invest the proceeds in real Estate in the City of Annapolis, for the benefit of said child." He asks permission to sell Joseph "either at public or private sale." [The related petition identifies E. M. E. Penny as the petitioner's daughter.]
