Petition #20985445

Abstract

Charles R. Stewart states that he purchased the term slave Eliza from Nicholas Owens in October 1854. The day after Stewart brought Eliza home, she ran away. Stewart found Eliza "seven or eight miles from the residence of said petitioner," brought her home, and warned her of the consequences of running away. When he told her that he could punish her by selling her out of state, Stewart reports that Eliza answered that "she had as leave go to Georgia as anywhere else." Although Eliza promised to stay at home, she ran away the next day. When Stewart found her at "Mr Randalls office" and told her he was glad to see her, he claims that Eliza responded, "I want nothing to do with you, I want to see Mr Randall." Stewart then sent her to jail. He prays for relief "in the premises by extending her time, and granting him the privilege of selling the said Eliza out of the State."
