Petition #20985552

Abstract

Samuel McPherson reports that on 4 September 1855, Lancelot Wilson, administrator of the late William Wilson Sr., obtained the court's permission to sell privately "for the most money he could obtain" a slave named Bill, who belonged to the estate of the deceased. McPherson states that the administrator sold Bill to George Wilson for $120, despite McPherson's repeated offers to pay $200 for Bill. The petitioner alleges that the sale was "a fraud on the Minor Children of the said Deceased, that no money has in fact been paid ... but that said Sale was a mere sham, in order that said Administrator might be able to get possession of said Negro himself." McPherson avers that he still offers $200 for Bill and offers the money to the court. He petitions the court to set aside the "pretended Sale" and to order Wilson "to deliver said Negro Boy Bill in the possession of your Petitioner."
