Petition #20985560

Abstract

Dennis Claude Jr. declares that his "term of year negro" named Jacob Simms ran away. After his arrest and upon his return to Claude's possession, the petitioner informed Simms of the consequences of his running away again. Nonetheless, Simms "again absconded" and was again brought back "without even being flogged." Now Claude asks the court to extend Simms's term of service in order to compensate him for "expenses, loss of time and trouble and annoyance" caused by the loss of Simms's labor. In addition, Claude seeks the court's permission to sell Simms "beyond the limits of the State of Maryland."

Result: Granted.
