Petition #20985570

Abstract

William H. Baldwin states that he is the owner of a slave named Richard whose term of service is set to expire in five years. Baldwin claims that Richard absconded from his service in the month of May 1851 and was "3 years and 8 months absent." Prior to this departure, Richard, who had already run away three times before, was brought before the court and "warned of the consequences of again running away." The petitioner asks the court to compensate him for his trouble and expense, including jail fees from Richard's incarceration, by extending Richard's term of service "to such an extent as your Honorable body may think right and just."

Result: Granted.
