Petition #20985572

Abstract

James S. S. Linthicum is the owner of a slave named Edward Hall, left to him by his father, Abner Linthicum, with the understanding that Hall will be free when he reaches age 35. James Linthicum complains that Hall "has frequently absconded" and "is constantly and continually in the habit of so doing." He maintains that "such absconding was not occasioned by any improper conduct" on his part and attests that "his treatment of said boy has been uniformly kind and considerate and always that of a careful and compassionate master." Linthicum asks the court to compensate him for his expenses by extending Hall's term of service and authorizing him to sell the slave within or without the state.
