Petition #20985574

Abstract

Charles R. Stewart, the administrator of the estate of the late Thomas Robinson, petitions the court for permission to sell Charlotte, a slave belonging to Jacob Dorsey Merriken. The deceased Robinson was formerly appointed executor of the estate of the late John D. Merriken as well as guardian of Merriken's children; since Robinson's death, the children have been without a guardian. Merriken's "Estate consisted of but a small of money," which Stewart annually paid to Merriken's widow for the support of the minor children, "and two servants," Lloyd and Charlotte. While Lloyd has been hired out for the support and education of Francis Marrion Merriken, Charlotte remained with the widow to take care of the children. Recently she has become "ungovernable," has attempted twice to run away, and is now confined in jail. Stewart fears that Jacob Dorsey Merriken "will or may loose" her entirely and considers it to the ward's benefit to sell her.
