Benjamin Jonathan, a free person of color, "represents that is now confined in the Washington County jail for coming into the state as a free negro." Jonathan denies these charges, stating that he is a resident of Maryland and "that he has not been beyond the limits of said state 30 days at any one time." He asks to be released from the custody of the sheriff.
