Petition #20985629

Abstract

Samuel Langrall is a mariner and "half owner of the Schooner Orbit," carrying freight between Baltimore and other ports in the Chesapeake Bay. Langrall states that "a negro boy named of Zenos, an orphan, aged about ten years applied to him to be taken on board," and the petitioner proceeded to go to court "to cause said relationship of apprenticeship to be entered on." The court denied the apprenticeship because Zenos's aunt appeared before the court and "represented her ability to support him." Despite the court's refusal, Zenos "hangs around his vessel and entreats to be taken into the service of petitioner." Langrall is still willing to take Zenos as an apprentice "to give him such Suitable Education as would enable him to become master of a Bay Craft ... Thus qualifying said boy when he attains manhood to earn a respectable livelihood." Langrall again asks the court to bind Zenos to him as an indentured apprentice.
