Petition #20985634

Abstract

On 21 July 1855, William Freeman purchased "the term of service" of Elias Burgess, a term slave. Four weeks later, Burgess ran away to Philadelphia and New York "as he is credibly informed." Burgess was "apprehended on the 10th October 1856 in this City and is now confined in Baltimore City Jail." Freeman says that Burgess has declared that he will not remain in anyone's service and "will run away again with the first chance." He alleges that Burgess has "other bad propensities particularly thievish propensities." The petitioner asks the court to extend Burgess's term of servitude and to let him to sell Burgess out of the state.
