Petition #20985638

Abstract

Henry Tydings recounts that in January 1856 he brought John Watts, "a slave for a term of years," before the court to be admonished "of the consequences of his bad conduct." The court warned Watts, the property of Tyding's minor brother, that should he run away again, "his time should be extended and that he should be sold out of the state." Tydings reports that Watts "left home without permission" last week and was gone for four days. When Tydings attempted to punish him with a whipping, Watts resisted and ran off and "requested to be put in jail & refused to go home." Tydings asks that Watts's term of service be extended and that he be allowed to sell Watts out of the state.
