Petition #20985642

Abstract

Richard Fowler, the owner of term slave John Barton, states that he bought Barton from Landy Linsted two years ago. Since that time Barton "has been exceedingly turbulen and has on several occations ran away and occasioned considerable trouble and expense." Fowler asks that Barton's term of service be extended and that he be permitted to sell the unexpired term "beyond the limits of this State, inasmuch as your Petitioner believes that from the notorious Bad conduct of said negro he could not realize anything near his real value by his sale within the limits of this state." Fowler reminds the court that Barton has been brought before the court before and "was distinctly admonished" about the consequences of his behavior.
