Petition #20985644

Abstract

Thomas R. Carey states that his slave named Robert Purman ran away, later to be found in Baltimore City "endeavoring to leave the city." Carey alleges that Purman had a habit of running away and had been warned by his former master "so that said slave cannot be ignorant of consequences nor of the Law." The petitioner requests that Purman's term of service be extended and that he be allowed to sell Purman out of state, concluding "as the negro by his conduct seems desirous of leaving the State without permission I ask your Hon Court for the privilege of gratifying him with my permission."
