Petition #20985721

Abstract

Richard Weems states that eighteen-year-old Charles Brown was to be freed by John Sellman when Brown arrived "at the age of 20 years." In April 1856, Brown ran away from Sellman but was captured and placed in jail. With Sellman's permission, the petitioner took Brown from the jail "under a promise from the said negro that he would willingly & obediently go and serve the petitioner faithfully." Shortly thereafter, Brown ran away again. Weems states that Brown then "returned home with a butcher knife & pistol and threatened the life of one of the other servants." The petitioner asks that Brown's term of service be extended "to cover losses" incurred by him.
