On 20 July 1854, Jane Dorman purchased a twelve-year-old term slave named Henrietta for $350 from John Denning. Since the purchase, Dorman reports that Henrietta has become "vicious and turbulent," frequently running away and causing her "much inconvenience and unnecessary trouble." Dorman also alleges that Henrietta "upon several occasions did steal, carry away and squander sums of money." The petitioner believes "that it is entirely beyond her power to control said negro slave." Dorman asks the court to extend Henrietta's term of service and to allow Dorman to sell her out of the state.
