Petition #20985827

Abstract

Debora Weems, widow and executrix of Dr. David Weems, reports that she has renounced the bequests "made her by the will of her husband," which included a slave woman and her children. She chose instead to claim "as widow one third of the personal Estate of her said husband." Weems alleges that the slave family in question and some notes were "her property before her marriage and have been and still are hers in her own right." She asks the court to "order and direct that said negroes and notes are the property of your petitioner in her own right" and that as such they not be "returned to this court or accounted for as Executrix."
